First remote solar power plant with beehives in Lithuania


This year, the first in Lithuania remote solar power plant with beehives installed next to it will start to operate. This 1 MW power plant project implemented in Utena according to the international environmentalists’ recommendations will not only generate green energy but will also contribute to conservation of bee populations and biological diversity. The project is implemented by the renewable energy company Green Genius.

The USA, Canada and other countries are already practising installation of beehives next to solar plants in order to protect the critically dwindling bee populations. The plant pollination performed by the bees is very important for the preservation of various flora species. The green field area with the wild-flower plantations around the solar farms offer a favourable ecosystem for reproduction of bees.

“The beehives next to the solar farms are being installed all around the world in order to contribute to conservation of these endangered insects so very critical for nature. We intend to use this project in Utena to introduce this good practice in Lithuania. The installation of beehives and creation of favourable environment will be conducted in cooperation with the professional beekeepers,” said Ruslan Sklepovič, CEO of Green Genius.

1 MW remote solar power plant with beehives in Utena will soon be available for purchase or rent to any Lithuanian resident wishing to use electricity generated from the renewable energy sources. The plant surveillance is available via the installed video cameras. In addition, the quantity of the generated energy can be monitored.

According to Sklepovič, this will be the first project of this kind in Lithuania, however, the future plans entail installation of beehives next to other farms of solar projects to be implemented. The plants developed by this company will be marked with a special “Sun Beehives” logo.

“Nearly a third of the food products consumed by humans is made of plants, which can grow only thanks to the pollination performed by insects. Honey bees pollinate up to 80% of the plants. Unfortunately, studies show that the bee populations around the world are continuously decreasing, which is to a certain degree caused by intensity of farming, use of pesticides, climate change and other factors. Installation of hives next to solar power plants is the possibility to contribute to preservation of bees while creating a sustainable, well-informed and ecological urban community. The technology of solar plants is environmentally friendly and the surrounding wild-flower plantations can become an excellent ecosystem for bee reproduction, while the flower nectar will offer the bees the necessary source of nutrition,” said Dr Visvaldas Varžinskas, project partner and founder of the urban beekeeping initiative

Green Genius has previously implemented one solar project in Utena, next to which, the first beehives have been recently placed. The company has also built a solar power plant for Utenos Alus Brewery operating in this city.
