Green Genius Connects Lithuania’s Largest Capacity Commercial Battery to the Grid in Jurbarkas

Renewable energy company Green Genius has successfully connected a 49 MW / 196 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to the electricity grid, located next to its operational 80 MW wind farm in Jurbarkas. This is currently the largest capacity commercial battery in Lithuania, distinguished primarily by its four-hour operating duration at maximum power.

The battery will allow a portion of the wind-generated energy to be stored when generation is high and electricity consumption is low, returning it to the grid when demand increases. This shifts electricity supply from periods of lower demand and lower prices to peak hours, increasing the flexibility of the electricity system, helping balance renewable energy generation, and reducing market price fluctuations.

“The four-hour operating cycle is what sets this project apart in the Lithuanian market. The expansion of renewable energy requires flexibility—it is important not only to generate green electricity but also to ensure it is supplied to the grid when it is needed most. Batteries of this capacity enable energy to be shifted between different times of the day and reduce price peaks,” says Ruslan Sklepovič, CEO of Green Genius. “Recognizing the potential of this technology, we are continuing to develop storage projects in Lithuania and other markets.”

Further Expansion: Three New Storage Projects

The Jurbarkas project is one of several battery parks currently being developed by Green Genius in the Baltics. The company is preparing to connect other storage facilities currently under construction to the grid, the majority of which are co-located with solar power projects.

Two additional storage facilities will soon become operational in Lithuania: in Šeduva (15 MW / 60 MWh) and Izabelinė, Ignalina district (17.3 MW / 69.2 MWh). The Jēkabpils storage project (50 MW / 200 MWh) is also under construction in Latvia. All these projects are designed for a four-hour energy storage and discharge cycle.

The company already has operational experience in this sector. Lithuania’s first battery providing commercial services, integrated with a local solar park, has been operating in Butrimonys, Alytus district, for over a year.
