“Hesburger” network in Lithuania transitions to 100% solar energy

The largest fast food chain in Finland and the Baltic States, “Hesburger,” in collaboration with the renewable energy company “Green Genius,” now uses only solar energy in its operations. This was achieved by connecting to the new “Green Genius” remote solar power plant in the Trakai region.

The new “Green Genius” solar park is located on 12 hectares of land in Kalviai, Trakai district. The capacity of this solar power plant is 6.16 MW, consisting of 9,300 solar modules. Thanks to this solar power plant, about 2,587 tons of carbon dioxide emissions will be avoided annually. The park uses the latest and most efficient system with trackers, which ensures maximum energy production throughout the daylight hours.

“Whenever possible, the ‘Hesburger’ network always opts for sustainable, environmentally and climate-friendly solutions in its operations. In Finland, we have been using green wind energy for many years. A few years ago in Lithuania, we started installing solar panels on our restaurant buildings, and now, in collaboration with ‘Green Genius,’ we have transitioned to 100% sustainable solar energy. This is a particularly important step in implementing the company’s social responsibility and sustainability strategy,” says Ieva Salmela, Director of International Development and Marketing at “Hesburger.”

All “Hesburger” restaurants operating in Lithuania, as well as the sauce factory in Kaunas, consumed 9.8 GWh of electricity last year. The capacity of the new “Green Genius” remote solar power plant in Trakai district will be dedicated to supplying “Hesburger” with sustainable electricity.

“All ‘Hesburger’ restaurants in Lithuania have started using green electricity produced in Lithuania from the newly built solar park, and we appreciate this. It is an excellent example of social responsibility, showing that businesses can contribute to reducing climate change, strengthening the country’s energy independence, and promoting sustainable development. This step not only enhances sustainability but also ensures stable electricity prices in the long term, which is crucial for business success,” says Karolis Proscevičius, Head of Sales at “Green Genius.”

The “Hesburger” restaurant network currently consists of more than 470 restaurants in 9 countries. Of these, 164 restaurants operate in the Baltic States: 61 in Lithuania, 51 in Latvia, and 52 in Estonia. The “Hesburger” network also operates in Finland (274), Bulgaria (31), Ukraine (7), Germany (2), Romania (1), and Poland (1). In Finland alone, “Hesburger” employs over 6,000 people, and the total number of employees across the network internationally exceeds 8,700.
