Green Genius to power Carlsberg Group brewery in Lithuania with solar PV and battery system

Green Genius, a renewable energy company, has launched a cutting-edge solar PV and battery storage solution for Švyturys-Utenos Alus, one of the most advanced breweries in the region and part of the Carlsberg Group. The new hybrid energy system – combining 7.5 MW of solar power with 6 MWh of battery storage – enables the brewery to fully decarbonize its electricity consumption and sets a benchmark for industrial sustainability in the Baltics.

The hybrid park operates under an Energy-as-a-Service model – a first-of-its-kind energy supply and financing solution in Lithuania’s industrial sector. Recognised as one of the most innovative setups in Europe, the solar and storage park spans two locations: Utena and Butrimonys (Alytus district). The total investment into the project reached €7.5 million.

Lithuania’s largest private battery storage system

The hybrid energy park includes battery systems with a capacity of 6 MWh and 4 MW power output – currently the largest privately used battery solution in Lithuania, either by businesses or households.

“This project is a double win for Lithuania. First, one of the country’s largest industrial producers is now fully powered by green electricity – entirely CO₂-free. Secondly, the batteries are integrated into the grid, strengthening national energy resilience and helping grid operators balance the system. This is especially relevant now as the Baltic States synchronize with Western Europe,”
says Ruslanas Sklepovičius, CEO of Green Genius.

“We have strong environmental commitments and a clear strategy to meet them. A company’s purpose cannot be limited to profit. It’s also about leadership in sustainability, climate action, and ensuring a healthier environment for people and the planet. We believe our example will inspire other businesses in Lithuania. By investing in green energy, we also contribute to Lithuania’s energy security – something recent years have shown to be crucial,” says Rolandas Viršilas, CEO of Švyturys-Utenos Alus.

Among Europe’s most innovative clean energy solutions

The InnoSolveGreen project – as the solar and battery system is titled – has been recognised by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) as one of the most innovative energy solutions in Europe. It is the first industrial-scale decarbonization project of this kind in Lithuania and the Baltics.

A 2.5 MW rooftop solar power plant with 2 MWh lithium-ion battery storage has been installed on the brewery’s facility in Utena. To meet full annual demand for clean power, a remote 5 MW solar park with 4 MWh storage was also built in Butrimonys, Alytus district, supplying electricity directly to the brewery.

For the first time in a single system, both direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) battery connections have been integrated – a breakthrough that enables up to 30% more efficient grid usage.

Zero upfront investment for the brewery

The project was fully developed and installed by Green Genius, with €7.5 million in total investments. The financing was provided by Citadele Bank and €2.6 million co-funding from the EU Innovation Fund, administered by CINEA.

According to Ruslanas Sklepovičius, the Energy-as-a-Service model is gaining popularity across Europe’s industrial sector, especially under the pressure to align with the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality targets. This model allows companies to switch to renewable energy without the need for upfront capital investment.
