Biomethane Plant to be Built in Pakruojis District: ILTE Finances Green Genius Project

The national development bank ILTE and international renewable energy company Green Genius have signed a loan agreement to develop a biomethane plant in the Pakruojis district.

The project value exceeds €10 million, with €6 million provided through the “Billion for Business” (Milijardas verslui) loan program. The facility, planned for the village of Peleniškiai, will generate 30 GWh of energy and produce up to 3 million cubic meters of biomethane.

“By investing in this new plant, we are applying our experience as industry leaders. The country’s first successful biomethane conversion and grid integration served as the technological foundation that allows us to create real value today for both the regional economy and national energy security. This is a strategic transformation: we are converting local organic waste into a critical energy resource, directly reducing reliance on fossil fuel imports,” says Dr. Darius Biekša, Head of the Transport Decarbonization Business Line at Green Genius.

Biomethane is a renewable gas with properties equivalent to natural gas. It can be supplied through existing gas infrastructure and used for heating, electricity generation, or transport. The project aims to increase local energy production and reduce fossil gas imports.

The plant will process over 100,000 tonnes of organic waste annually, primarily cattle manure. The digestate remaining after processing will be used as biofertilizer, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers.

“This project brings agriculture and energy together, turning local waste into energy. Solutions like this increase regional energy independence while reducing the environmental burden,” states ILTE.

Biomethane production utilizes agricultural waste, food scraps, or sewage sludge. It reduces methane emissions from landfills and links agriculture, waste management, and energy into a closed-loop resource cycle. During combustion, it only releases the amount of CO₂ that the plants absorbed during their growth.

Once implemented, the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually.

Green Genius has been developing biogas projects for over a decade. Its first plants began operating in 2013, and the company currently manages 11 biogas and biomethane facilities.
