Green Genius launches a new biogas power plant in Belarus and plans to build two more

Green Genius, a renewable energy company that is part of Modus Group, has successfully launched new biogas power plant in Belarus. Total of more than EUR 5 million was invested in this project. 1 megawatt (MW) biogas power plant is located in Brest Region. The funding for this project was provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

“We have established ourselves as a strong biogas project developer in Belarus – 7 of our biogas plants are operating here. Rapid growth of livestock farming in the country creates favourable conditions to develop biogas projects, therefore, we will continue growing our business in this market. We are planning to start the construction of two more biogas plants this quarter in Minsk and Grodno districts,” says Ruslanas Sklepovičius, CEO of Green Genius and Modus Group Board Member responsible for renewable energy area.

A biogas plant with a total power of 1 MW is located near one of the biggest pig complexes in the country. To produce green power, the newly built biogas power plant will use approximately 250 thousand tons of organic waste from the pig complex every year. Approximately 8 GWh of clean electricity will be generated there annually.

“New biogas power plant not only will generate green energy but also neutralize odour from pig farm and convert organic waste to liquid odourless fertilizer. In this way biogas power plants contribute to the implementation of the principles of circular economy and create positive impact for environment and local communities,” says head of Green Genius biogas division Paulius Babrauskas.

Currently, Green Genius operates 7 biogas power plants in Belarus with a total capacity of 8 MW. Each year they will supply more than 64 GWh of green energy to the country.

Green Genius is developing renewable energy (solar and biogas) projects in 6 European markets: Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Spain, and Italy. The company is also actively looking for opportunities to expand in other Central European countries.

The total capacity of Green Genius projects currently exceeds 100 MW. According to the company’s estimations, these projects allow saving around 170 thousand tons of CO2 every year. By 2025, the total capacity of implemented renewable energy projects by Green Genius is expected to reach 1.5 GW.
